In remarks about impeaching President Donald Trump, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) said that it was what Democrats had to do–and quickly–to keep Trump from being re-elected in 2020.
Democrats introduced two articles of impeachment against Trump on Tuesday, but neither one involves anything criminal and terms like bribery and quid pro quo were not used to describe Trump’s behavior. Instead, vague notions of “abuse of power” and “obstruction of Congress” were used.
Schiff’s comments attempted to address critics who said Democrats should just let the voters decide whether Trump did something wrong in a July 25 phone call with Ukraine.
He said that dropping impeachment would be the equivalent of letting Trump cheat again in 2020. A previous investigation had found no evidence he “cheated” in 2016, however.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) later contradicted Schiff and said that impeachment wasn’t about elections.
