President Trump named former FBI director James Comey as “probably one of the people” who lead the effort to spy on his 2016 presidential campaign.
“How did this whole investigation start? Because I think it’s corrupt as hell,” Trump said of the FBI’s probe into debunked allegations of illegal collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign.
The FBI’s potentially criminal activities during the early days of its investigation have themselves become a target of federal investigators now that special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe has ended without any finding of collusion.
Spearheading this effort is Attorney General Bill Barr, who hinted, “To the extend there was any overreach, I believe it was a few people in the upper echelons of the [FBI] and perhaps the Department [of Justice], but those people are no longer there.”
Trump’s comments, spoken during a Fox News interview, came as Comey made waves of his own with a New York Times op-ed disparaging the President.
“Mr. Trump eats your soul in small bites,” said Comey, who was fired by Trump in May 2017.
