A high-profile figure in Washington just quit his job, and the White House is in shock. This decision has stunned everyone and will have a major effect on American politics going forward.
Patrick Shanahan, the Acting Secretary of Defense, has chosen to withdraw his nomination to officially serve in the key post. President Trump made the announcement and also publicly shared who will take Shanahan’s place.
“Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan, who has done a wonderful job, has decided not to go forward with his confirmation process so that he can devote more time to his family,” Trump tweeted.
He continued: “I thank Pat for his outstanding service and will be naming Secretary of the Army, Mark Esper, to be the new Acting Secretary of Defense. I know Mark, and have no doubt he will do a fantastic job!”
It’s possible that should Army Secretary Mark Esper serve well as Acting Secretary of Defense, Trump will nominate him to go through the confirmation process to fill the position permanently.
In the meantime, speculation will only mount on his list of other potential nominees for the post. Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) would be a popular choice with the base and has the credentials to do the job. Only time will tell.
