Ex-NFL player Edawn Coughman was arrested on Wednesday and accused of vandalizing two of his own Gwinette County, Georgia restaurants, the Washington Examiner reported.
Witnesses reported to police that Coughman wrote MAGA and racial epithets on the walls of his restaurants and caused other damage. They suggested he wanted to collect on an insurance scam.
When Coughman was arrested in his car, police found a crowbar and other items consistent with the damage to the restaurants.
“The case does not fit the mold of our typical criminal investigations,” an official said.
There seem to be a far greater number of hate crime hoaxes in the U.S. today than there are actual hate crimes.
