Fox News host Brett Baier attacked acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan on “Fox News Sunday” over the agreement with Mexico to avoid tariffs. Baier grilled McAleenan about whether the deal was really new or whether many aspects had been negotiated months earlier.
McAleenan insisted that the agreement was new and went far beyond previous commitments made by Mexico. Precious commitments of troops on the border were only 4-500 instead of the 6,000 that will now be deployed.
“The president put a charge in this whole dialogue with Mexico with the tariff threat, brought them to the table, the foreign minister from Mexico arrived within hours. He arrived the next day with real proposals on the table,” McAleenan said.
Responding to Pelosi’s comments that “threats” are not a good way to make foreign policy, McAleenan acknowledged that people can “disagree with tactics,” but that it worked. That’s what counts.
It’s not exactly clear why Baier chose to attack McAleenan over the agreement, but he didn’t get very far in his complaints before McAleenan set him straight. Trump’s tariff threat worked, and all Democrats can do is gripe about it.
