President Donald Trump took some unexpected time out of his day to respond to mounting rumors and confirm whether they were true.
“What he was trying to do was terrible, and he was caught. I’m very proud to say we caught him,” Trump said, referring to the plot by former FBI Director Andrew McCabe and others to forcibly remove him from office.
Trump made the comments to reporters at the White House after the news broke that McCabe, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, and other unnamed officials discussed ousting Trump by invoking the Constitution’s 25th Amendment.
The 25th Amendment is a provision that only spells out a path to action when “the President is unable to discharge the powers of duties of his office,” not simply because you don’t like him and would prefer someone else.
Trump tweeted a quote from Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz, who said, “Trying to use the 25th Amendment to try and circumvent the Election is a despicable act of unconstitutional power grabbing…which happens in third world countries.”
“You have to obey the law. This is an attack on our system & Constitution,” the quote, attributed to Dershowitz, continued. With McCabe finally out of the picture, however, Trump won’t have to deal with someone he described as “a disgraced man” any longer.
