Democrat Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema has thrown her support behind a GOP program that would quickly deport asylum-seekers who were determined not to have valid claims, Fox News reported.
Arizona is a border state that has been impacted by recent spikes in illegal immigration and asylum seekers. Operation Safe Return should remove family units that do not qualify for asylum because they give a reason other than “credible fear” for wanting to enter the U.S.
“This pilot program would apply to families who aren’t claiming ‘credible fear,’ which of course is the first threshold in seeking asylum,” Sinema said in announcing her support of the program.
Democrats Sen. Joe Manchin, (WV) and Doug Jones (AL) have also joined Republicans to support this bill, although passage in the Democrat-run House is uncertain if not unlikely.
President Donald Trump announced last week that a new policy would require immigrants to seek asylum in the first country they come to after leaving their country of origin.
