The National Association of Hispanic Journalists did not take kindly to First Lady Jill Biden comparing Latinos to breakfast tacos during a speech on Monday that was meant to be an olive branch to the disenchanted minority group.
Biden said that “the diversity of this community, as distinct as the bodegas of the Bronx, as beautiful as the blossoms of Miami, and as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio, is your strength.” She mispronounced bodegas in addition to the other offensive comments.
But the journalist group said that she demonstrated “a lack of cultural knowledge and sensitivity to the diversity of Latinos in the region.”
It also said, Do not reduce us to stereotypes.”
Biden press secretary Michael LaRosa tweeted on Tuesday morning: “The First Lady apologizes that her words conveyed anything but pure admiration and love for the Latino community.”
