Chinese President Xi Jinping told Chinese military officers at the annual National People’s Congress that it was time to prepare for war and specifically mentioned Taiwanese independence forces as a reason why.
Xi also mentioned territorial issues with India as a reason to beef up military readiness, along with tensions with the U.S. over its coronavirus response.
India is worried that it will be the target of China’s aggression because of numerous small border disputes that are ongoing between the two countries.
The NPC approved a 6.6% increase in defense spending meant to help increase readiness, which ABC News Australia said was actually the lowest increase in many years.
China’s state-run media left out the most argumentative part of Xi’s comments and made it seem like he was just focused on recovery from the coronavirus and strengthening the country’s infrastructure.
