Russian jet fighters just intercepted an American aircraft in international airspace over the Mediterranean on Tuesday.
According to a statement from the U.S. Navy’s 6th fleet, “On May 26, 2020, a U.S. Navy P-8A aircraft was flying in the Eastern Mediterranean over international waters and was intercepted by two Russian Su-35 aircraft over a period of 65 minutes.”
This latest incident is the third in the last two months involving Russian aircraft intercepting American aircraft. All interceptions were in international airspace.
On April 19th, Russian SU-35’s similarly intercepted a P8-A getting as close as eight meters to the Navy reconnaissance aircraft.
Four days before that interception another SU-35 intercepted a U.S. Navy aircraft. These actions have raised tensions between Russia and the United States.
Russia seems to be flexing its military muscle as it competes with the U.S. in the Mediterranean. Hopefully, such actions will end as the danger is clear and present.
