A Ukrainian journalist said Thursday that Ukraine’s Interior Ministry has distributed 10,000 automatic rifles to its civilian citizens since Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine late Wednesday night.
The Ukrainian Parliament just voted to allow non-military citizens to carry firearms for protection and defense during the fight with the Russians.
Shooting ranges are seeing high demand as citizens learn to use the weapons they are now permitted to carry.
A message from Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky on Twitter Thursday said, “We will give weapons to anyone who wants to defend the country. Be ready to support Ukraine in the squares of our cities.”
It is unclear how much help even automatic rifles will be against drone bombers and fighter jets, however. Ukraine remains outnumbered and ill-prepared, though courageous in the face of its Russian foe.
