President Donald Trump has considered invoking the Insurrection Act in order to use active duty military to stop riots in various major U.S. cities, but is currently more focused on getting states to deploy the National Guard, Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Monday.
The president took governors to task Monday over failures to stop rioting including setting cars and buildings on fire, looting from businesses, and beating other protesters and police officers on the scene.
Trump praised the National Guard in Minnesota for working quickly there to restore order and advised other governors to use their state’s troops as well.
“Those guys walked through that stuff like it was butter,” Trump said. “They got out and were wearing dark black uniforms … they were there in the thousands, they just walked right down the street, knocking them out with tear gas.”
“It has gotten to the point where today, the president has said enough is enough,” McEnany said. “There are tools we can use.”
