President Trump announced on Thursday that the U.S. will be withdrawing from the Open Skies Treaty because Russia is failing to uphold its end of the agreement.
The treaty was put in place in 2002 to allow Russia and the U.S. to fly surveillance aircraft over each other’s territory.
The treaty was an important part of ensuring transparency between the two nations as they scaled back cold war policies.
President Trump said, “Russia and us have developed a very good relationship. As you know, we worked on the oil problem together. I think we have a very good relationship with Russia. But Russia didn’t adhere to the treaty, so until they adhere, we will pull out.”
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made it clear that the U.S. will return to treaty compliance if Russia is willing to do the same.
While many are concerned about the stability of relations between the U.S. and Russia, this is the right move to make. President Trump needs to show Russia and the world that we will demand full compliance in any treaties we sign.
