President Donald Trump signed an executive order making grants, loans and other resources available to companies who can produce or mine minerals critical to production of U.S. products and services that are now mostly provided by other countries like China.
31 of 35 minerals on the list are now imported in all or part, and there is no U.S. production of 14 minerals needed to make essential products in America.
The minerals are used for the military, national infrastructure, and the general economy.
They help to make “airplanes, computers, cell phones, electricity generation and transmission systems, and advanced electronics,” the order said.
“Though these minerals are indispensable to our country, we presently lack the capacity to produce them in processed form in the quantities we need,” according to the order.
