President Trump is blocking downloads of the popular app and alleged Chinese spyware Tik Tok. The U.S. Commerce Department will block downloads of the app starting on Sunday.
Tik Tok isn’t the only app being blocked in the United States. The Chinese-owned WeChat will also be banned as officials are scrutinizing Chinese-created apps that harvest user data.
While the app is scheduled to be banned on Sunday, as U.S. tech giant Oracle is attempting to enter into a partnership with the Chinese firm ByteDance. Such a partnership would come with stipulations that would remove any risk of harm to U.S. national security.
President Trump commented on the situation saying, “I’m not prepared to sign off on anything. I have to see the deal. It has to be 100% as far as national security is concerned.”
If President Trump isn’t satisfied with what Oracle and ByteDance put together it’s curtains for Tik Tok–a long time coming according to some.
Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said, “Today’s actions prove once again that President Trump will do everything in his power to guarantee our national security and protect Americans from the threats of the Chinese Communist Party.” Now more than ever we need a President capable of standing up to China.
