President Donald Trump said over the weekend that it was “common sense” to temporarily halt some visa and immigration programs while the U.S. has 30 million people out of work.
His plan seems to make perfect sense to a majority of Americans, 80% of which said in April that they agreed with a halt to immigration and 55 to 85% who still say so in 10 swing states.
“I think it’s going to make a lot of people very happy,” Trump said about his plan to halt H-1B visas, H-2B visas, J-1 visas, and L-1 visas.
Research by economists showed that these visa programs resulted in the transfer of $500 billion in wealth to foreign workers every year and that they are a burden on taxpayers as well.
In the past, 1.4 million foreign workers came into the country on the visas each year, and some American workers had been fired and replaced by foreigners.
