President Donald Trump refused an invitation to address the World Health Organization on Monday, instead sending HHS Secretary Alex Azar to deliver a speech that attacked the organization.
Azar said that the organization failed to inform the world about the coronavirus and their “failure cost many lives.”
“We saw that WHO failed at its core mission of information-sharing and transparency when member states do not act in good faith,” Azar continued. “This cannot ever happen again. The status quo is intolerable. WHO must change and it must become far more transparent and far more accountable.”
Chinese leader Xi Jinping also spoke at the session Monday, announcing that China would donate $2 billion to the global coronavirus pandemic response.
The development led Trump to lean more toward keeping U.S. WHO funding frozen, as it has been since early April because of WHO’s failures on coronavirus.
