On Friday, after considering a pardon for GOP operative Roger Stone, President Trump decided to commute Stone’s 3-year sentence scheduled to begin on Tuesday. Trump had been considering a pardon because he believed that Stone has been treated “unfairly.”
When asked about Stone’s situation, Trump responded saying, “I’ll be looking at it. I think Roger Stone was very unfairly treated, as for many people. And in the meantime, [James] Comey and all these guys are walking around, including Biden and Obama, because we caught them spying on my campaign. Who would have believed that?”
Stone was sentenced in February to three years in prison for obstruction, witness tampering, and making false statements to Congress in relation to the Russian collusion hoax.
Stone views his three-year sentence as a death sentence considering his age and the prevalence of COVID-19 in prisons around the nation.
The White House issued a statement regarding the commutation which reads in part:
Roger Stone is a victim of the Russia Hoax that the Left and its allies in the media perpetuated for years in an attempt to undermine the Trump Presidency. There was never any collusion between the Trump Campaign, or the Trump Administration, with Russia.
Roger Stone’s life was upended by an illegitimate investigation that should never have existed. It’s time to let Roger Stone go and put the real criminals behind bars.
