President Donald Trump just announced that he may delay it permanently. Democrats are furious about this move — he has outmaneuvered them again.
Elaborating on his executive order to temporarily defer payroll taxes “for individuals earning less than $104,000 annually,” Trump said the cut “may be permanent” in the future.
He also responded to critics who alleged that the deferral — which will last “from Sept. 1 through Dec. 31” — will negatively affect the Social Security trust fund.
“This will have zero impact on Social Security,” said Trump to reporters asking him about the state of the benefits program. “We protect Social Security.”
Some critics even went so far as to claim that Trump wanted to completely gut Social Security by forgiving the deferral and eventually making the payroll tax cut permanent.
“We just heard it straight from Trump’s own mouth: If reelected, he will destroy Social Security,” tweeted Social Security Works without proof. The organization exists just to attack Republicans.
