President Donald Trump warned Iraq on Sunday that he would impose severe sanctions on them if they kicked U.S. troops out of the country after an air strike killed a top Iranian military official.
Trump said in a tweet that the sanctions on Iraq would make those currently on Iran, which have crippled the economy there, look “tame.”
Iraqi lawmakers voted Sunday to expel U.S. military personnel, which have been assisting the Iraqi military in getting rid of ISIS and al Qaeda fighters there.
Additional troops were sent to the area for protection after an attack on the U.S. embassy in Baghdad.
Trump also said that the U.S. military base in Iraq was “extraordinarily expensive” and that U.S. troops would not leave it without being paid back that cost.
