President Donald Trump said he felt “very badly” about former White House Strategist Steve Bannon’s arrest for defrauding donors to the “We Build the Wall” crowdfunding campaign, but noted that he hadn’t been “dealing with” Bannon “for a very long time.”
The effort spearheaded by Bannon and three others raised $25 million and build a wall structure on private land, but it quickly showed signs of erosion and was inferior to the government-constructed wall, according to reports.
“I thought that was a project that was being done for showboating reasons,” Trump said of the private wall.
He also said he thought the group built it to make him look bad.
Bannon and the others are accused of using crowd-raised funds for personal expenses and diverting money illegally to themselves.
