President Trump has had enough. For the first time, he invoked the “Defense Production Act” to direct General Motors to begin building ventilators.
The DPA gives the President the authority to direct the private sector to produce certain products during emergencies.
In a statement from the White House on Friday, Trump said, “Today, I signed a presidential memorandum directing the secretary of Health and Human Services to use any and all authority available under the Defense Production Act to require General Motors to accept, perform, and prioritize federal contracts for ventilators.”
General Motors had been less than cooperative about switching to ventilator production and President Trump has been threatening to use the DPA for some time.
President Trump said in the statement, “GM was wasting time. Today’s action will help ensure the quick production of ventilators that will save American lives.”
President Trump has once again demonstrated that he is committed to saving lives.
