Former MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews discussed the reason for his departure from the network during an appearance on the “Reid Out,” admitting that he “remarked on somebody’s appearance in the makeup room.”
Journalist Laura Bassett said in March of 2020 that Matthews “inappropriately flirted” with her before she appeared on his show, asking her, “Why haven’t I fallen in love with you yet?”
Bassett said she was uncomfortable because she was appearing to talk about sexual assault allegations against Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign.
“I know the reason I left,” Matthews said. “Somebody reported that I complimented somebody — actually, I’m going to use the right words here — I commented, remarked on somebody’s appearance in the makeup room. I shouldn’t have done that. Nobody has to come defend me. By the way, I kept all my friends. Nobody needs to defend me. I did something wrong.”
Matthews said he would “move on” from the incident and that he “took complete ownership” of what he did.
