President Donald Trump just confirmed it. Justice will prevail because of one reason — and now Americans have hope again. This is amazing.
“A society without religion cannot prosper,” said Trump in a statement. “A nation without faith cannot endure — because justice, goodness, and peace cannot prevail without the grace of God.”
Trump delivered his statement marking the 850th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Saint Thomas Becket earlier this week, calling Becket a “lion of religious liberty” whose “death serves as a powerful and timeless reminder.”
Trump noted “that our freedom from religious persecution is not a mere luxury or accident of history, but rather an essential element of our liberty,” and he couldn’t be more right. This is why we have to keep fighting for it.
In the United States, our Constitution — through the powerful words in the First Amendment — makes it clear that the “free exercise of religion” cannot be prohibited by the government.
The framers of the Constitution came from religious persecution and they were not going to abide by it here. Religious liberty is a natural right from God; it cannot be suspended at any point, even during a pandemic. We must remember that.
