President Donald Trump is seriously considering an executive order to require that essential medications be manufactured in the United States, a source told CNBC.
Trump wants to see the U.S. supply chain become less dependent on China after that nation threatened to withhold needed drugs from America during the current pandemic.
As of 2019, congressional testimony said, only 28% of all pharmaceutical manufacturing is in the U.S., while 72% is overseas, mostly in China and Europe.
Advisers to Trump are looking at practical ways of making his goal of self-reliance a reality, the source said to CNBC.
The pharmaceutical industry does not support the executive order for a number of reasons and has lobbied hard against it.
