18-year-old Abu Conteh was arrested and charged with the death of a man he and a gang of others robbed on Christmas Eve in the Bronx, coming away with only $1.
Police have identified the others involved in the attack on 61-year-old Juan Fresnada and his partner, 29-year-old Bayron Caceres. Fresnada received head injuries that caused his brain to swell as he attempted to protect Caceres from the attackers.
Caceres was not seriously injured in the attack, but Fresnada died four days later in the hospital from his injuries.
Conteh was charged with murder, gang assault and robbery for the attack.
It remains to be seen whether he will get out on bail under a new law in the city that has allowed several others responsible for deaths to go free.
