Rep. Mike Lee (R-UT) said that the briefing by President Donald Trump Wednesday about Iran’s air strikes against U.S. air bases in Iraq was the “worst” he had ever seen since being in Congress.
“What I found so distressing about that briefing was that one of the messages we received from the briefers was do not debate, do not discuss the issue of the appropriateness of further military intervention against Iran,” Lee said. “And that if you do, you’ll be emboldening Iran.”
Lee also said it was “insulting” and “demeaning” to be told not to debate and reminded the administration that Congress was given the power in the Constitution to declare war.
In his remarks, Lee referenced Article I section 8 of the Constitution and Federalist Paper 69 which said the president was not a king and could not unilaterally go to war the way a king could.
It was “unconstitutional” and “wrong” for Trump to tell Congress not to debate or object to his actions, Lee declared.
