On Friday, former President Donald Trump’s attorneys had their chance to make Trump’s case for why he should not be convicted of inciting a violent mob to attack the Capitol on January 6.
As part of their argument, they played a video that showed numerous members of Congress and other top officials including President Joe Biden speaking words of violence toward Trump or others that were worse than anything Trump had been accused of saying.
Biden, for instance, famously said during the campaign that he wanted to “beat the hell out of” Trump for disrespecting women. Sens. Jon Tester (D-MT) and Cory Booker (D-NY) both said Trump should get punched in the face during interviews with the press.
The video contrasted these and other statements with Trump’s words about being committed to law and order and peaceful protest. Trump attorney Bruce Castor ended the presentation by saying that the rioters on January 6 “hijacked the event for their own purposes.”
