Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Matt Hancock announced that he met with Prime Minister Boris Johnson to hand in his resignation following a scandal involving footage showing Hancock kissing an aide.
Hancock was the man responsible for the social distancing guidelines in the UK. The footage of him and his aide showed that Hancock had no interest in following those guidelines himself.
Hancock said in a statement posted to Twitter that, “I’ve been to see the prime minister to resign as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. I understand the enormous sacrifices that everybody in this country has made — that you have made — and those of us who make these rules have got to stick by them. And that’s why I’ve got to resign.”
If only Democrat governors like Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) and Gavin Newsom (D-CA) had the same integrity.
The controversy that led to Hancock’s resignation began when CCTV footage emerged of Hancock with his aide Gina Coladangelo. Both Hancock and Coladangelo are married and have three children respectively.
Unlike other scandals, infidelity wasn’t the story. Hancock’s clear disregard for his own social distancing guidelines is what infuriated British citizens and further reinforced the idea that the political class believes they are above the rules.
