President Donald Trump reacted early Sunday morning to news that Democrat Rep. Jeff van Drew of New Jersey may leave the Democrat party and join the Republicans over his opposition to impeachment.
“Wow, that would be big. Always heard Jeff is very smart!” Trump tweeted, referencing another tweet by Mike DeBonis reporting that Trump met with van Drew on Friday to urge him to make the move.
Van Drew was one of two Democrats to vote against setting up the rules for impeachment in the House, and been consistent in his opposition to the whole impeachment inquiry.
“An article of impeachment is a very specific, very serious action, literally akin to declaring war, because you’re disenfranchising voters,” Van Drew told reporters last week. “So some folks … may not like the people that voted for Trump, but they still voted.”
Van Drew also pointed out that Trump would not be convicted in the Senate trial and that impeachment was a political advantage for him, not for Democrats. “At the end of the day the Senate’s going to say he’s not guilty. Then he is going to speak about that — a lot.”
