New Jersey Rep. Jeff Van Drew officially changed his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican on Thursday after voting against two articles of impeachment of President Donald Trump as a Democrat on Wednesday night.
Impeachment was a major reason for Van Drew’s switch in party affiliation, and he was one of only three Democrats not to vote along party lines in favor of the impeachment articles.
“I believe that this is just a better fit for me,” Van Drew said after a meeting with Trump on Thursday afternoon. “This is who I am.”
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said that the move was significant because it very rarely happens that anyone goes from the majority to the minority party.
Van Drew pledged his “undying support” for Trump with the switch, and Trump called Van Drew “highly respected.”
