Fred P. Rooney, Jr., a former congressman from Pennsylvania, has died at the age of 94. Rooney represented the Lehigh Valley in Congress until 1978.
Rooney grew up in Bethlehem and continued to represent Lehigh Valley interests like Victaulic Co. in his consulting business even after leaving the House.
Rooney also represented Conrail, the Association of American Railroads and the American Iron and Steel Industry. His older brother Leo was a Bethlehem Steel executive.
A WWII veteran, Rooney served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in France. He also managed John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign efforts in Lehigh Valley and brought Kennedy to Moravian College two weeks before the 1960 election.
“They just don’t make them like him anymore,” nephew .J. Rooney said. “He made the world a better place.”
