Democrat hopeful Beto O’Rourke was caught on a hot mic denying any ambition for the Presidency in October. The unearthed audio is a far cry from O’Rourke’s current position on the matter.
O’Rourke is gearing up to announce his official 2020 campaign in the coming days and the videos of his adamant denial of the rumors are coming back to haunt him.
O’Rourke was asked about a potential bid for the White House in a CNN town hall during his 2018 Senate campaign. He responded by declaring that “the answer is no”, and cited the stress that the election put on his family as the deciding factor.
After O’Rourke was defeated by Ted Cruz in November, O’Rourke was again caught on tape confirming that he absolutely would not run for President.
O’Rourke told CBS’ 60 Minutes that “I don’t want to do it. I will not do it.” He went on to explain that too many family milestones were missed during the Senate campaign and claimed that “…our family could not survive more.”
The Texas Democrat has changed his tune in recent weeks, however. Apparently he’s decided that his young children can survive another grueling campaign. O’Rourke has reportedly told an El Paso news station that he would be running after all, and he’s expected to make an official announcement on Thursday.
