American Airlines employees need to be fully vaccinated by November 24 or face termination, an email from the company warned employees on Wednesday.
“To be clear, if you fail to comply with the requirement, the result will be termination from the company,” the email read.
More than 125,000 employees will be subject to the mandate. 30,000 have already retired or separated from the company voluntarily in 2020.
There will be medical and religious exemptions to the mandate, but no weekly testing option. Hundreds of employees protested the announcement on Thursday at the airline’s headquarters, and unions are warning that the mandate will make both labor shortages and burnout worse.
American is far from the only airline to require vaccinations of their employees, and some are even putting those who get valid exemptions on leave indefinitely. To date, Delta is the only airline not requiring vaccination for their employees.
