Texas Governor Greg Abbott is not happy about Austin city council’s unanimous decision to strip $150 million from the police budget on Thursday.
“Some cities are more focused on political agendas than public safety,” Governor Abbott said in a written statement. “Austin’s decision puts the brave men and women of the Austin Police Department and their families at greater risk, and paves the way for lawlessness.”
The decision would gradually strip and reallocate the funds, but it also elimated 150 currently vacant officer positions from being filled.
Abbott promised that the state legislature would take up the topic of its capital city’s police force during the next session, and said that until then, the Texas Department of Public Safety will protect the city.
If only all cities looking to defund police had that kind of state leadership, I wouldn’t be so worried about our country.
