Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) signed the Back the Blue Pledge in Houston on Wednesday in an effort to prevent police defunding in Texas.
“We have a duty to support the men and women who risk their lives to keep us safe,” Abbott said.
Abbott also questioned using state police in cities that have cut their police budgets, such as is currently happening in Austin.
“We will pass laws that support law enforcement & defund cities that defund police,” Abbott wrote in a celebratory tweet after the signing. “We will keep communities safe.”
Houston’s mayor has not followed the trend of defunding and has also provided funding for police to respond to nonviolent calls.
