Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) told Fox News host Maria Bartiromo on Sunday that he has asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate GoFundMe after the fundraising platform tried to reallocate $10 million donated to the Canadian “Freedom Convoy” trucker protests against coronavirus restrictions including vaccine mandates.
“It is theft on the part of GoFundMe,” Cruz said. “The Canadian truckers are heroes, patriots, and they are marching for your freedom and for my freedom.”
Cruz alleged that GoFundMe committed deceptive trade practices when they claimed that the money raised would go to the truckers, then tried to redirect it to charities they supported. Because of backlash from conservatives, the platform has backed off their plan and will now refund all of the money.
“When people gave money, they gave money under the promise it would go to the Freedom Convoy, not to whatever left-wing political ideology GoFundMe and other Silicon Valley companies support,” Cruz said.
A similar Christian-owned fundraising platform, GiveSendGo, has set up its own fundraiser for the convoy, and has raised $5 million so far.
