The Taliban have captured the key border town of Islam Qala, which provides a strategic connection between Afghanistan and Iran.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that the border town is “under our full control.” Video clips began circulating that showed Taliban fighters taking over the town.
The BBC reported that Islam Qala “is one of the biggest trade gateways into Iran, generating an estimated $20 [million] (£14m) in monthly revenue for the government,”
The U.S.-backed Afghanistan government needed that revenue source, and without it is in a terrible spot when it comes to countering the Taliban. Not even a month after U.S. forces left, the Taliban took key points and are boxing the government in.
With the last U.S. troops set to leave in September, the Taliban has already made significant moves to recapture Afghanistan. The Taliban will likely retake the entirety of Afghanistan, and that’s when the true terror will begin.
The fact that the U.S.-backed Afghanistan government has collapsed so quickly is horrifying. Despite all the work that has been done to build Afghanistan up, it was all for nothing.
