The Senate impeachment trial was rocked when Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) accused Senators of participating in a “cover-up.” Collins confirmed she then asked Chief Justice John Roberts to intervene.
This happened Wednesday after the House impeachment managers and President Trump’s defense team got in a fiery exchange.
The comments from Nadler drew serious fire from Republican Senators.
Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) said, “As one who is listening attentively and working hard to get to a fair process, I was offended.”
Nadler’s comments did constitute a violation of Senate rules. That prompted the intervention from Roberts.
Collins has been a critical part of impeachment. As a moderate Republican Democrats are hoping to leverage her. There appears to be little chance of that now as Democrats extreme rhetoric is alienating even the moderates.
