The news is spreading nationwide about a Supreme Court shocker. President Trump just stunned his opponents — they never saw this coming.
The Trump administration instituted a new rule last summer that provided more accountability on public benefits for potential immigrants but has been unable to enforce it. This could now change.
The rule, which “allows authorities to consider a foreign national’s reliance on government benefits when deciding whether to give them a green card,” has been injoined for months.
Under the law, federal authorities can already take into account whether a green card recipient would become reliant on cash assistance. This would add programs like Medicaid and SNAP.
Now, the Trump administration is asking the Supreme Court to lift the injunction from U.S. District Judge George Daniels — which was upheld earlier this month by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
If the Supreme Court allows the rule to move forward, it will represent another policy victory for Trump with the election just around the corner. This would certainly be bad timing for Democrats.
