The Supreme Court has agreed to consider yet another important case, the legality of the Remain in Mexico policy adopted by former President Donald Trump.
The Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) require illegal immigrants to live in Mexico while waiting for their asylum hearings, which can sometimes take over a year.
The policy discourages some illegal immigrants from trying to cross the border, because their plan is to get into the U.S. and then disappear. If they can’t get a foothold in the U.S., they won’t come at all.
In addition, some immigrants have complained that Mexico isn’t a safe place to stay while waiting.
Biden restarted the MPP under duress in December, but dragged his feet and only sent 410 migrants to Mexico under the program. The court’s decision won’t be made until summer.
