Chief Justice of the Iowa Supreme Court Mark Cady died unexpectedly on Friday. He had been on the Iowa Supreme Court since 1998 and had served as chief justice since 2011.
Some of Cady’s best-known opinions include legalizing same-sex marriage in Iowa in 2009, which was unanimous. Cady also helped strike down a 72-hour waiting period for abortions in the state in 2018, a 5-2 decision.
He was praised by women’s and LGBT groups for his judicial independence. He also advocated the end of life without parole for juvenile offenders under 18.
A time for Iowans to pay their respects to Cady and offer condolences to his family is being held Monday at Drake University in Des Moines.
Cady was 66 years old.
