The U.S. Supreme Court just did and former President Barack Obama is furious. One of his landmark achievements has been significantly rolled back. This is incredible.
In a major victory for religious freedom, the court ruled in a 7-2 decision that the Little Sisters of the Poor are protected from having to offer contraceptive coverage in employees’ health insurance.
After the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act — otherwise known as Obamacare — passed in 2013, the Little Sisters took action to defend their constitutional right to follow their beliefs.
Here’s why: Under Obamacare, not only were most employers mandated to offer health insurance, they were also forced to offer birth control coverage as part of the plan options.
Given that Catholicism doesn’t approve of contraception — or especially anything that could potentially cause an abortion — the Little Sisters simply asked that they be exempt from the requirement.
Relief didn’t come, however, until President Donald Trump took office. The Department of Health and Human Services offered a religious exemption, which the Supreme Court has now upheld.
