Sen. Maizie Hrono (D-HI) said Monday that she wants term limits for Supreme Court Justices as a way to mitigate decisions like the one not to block the new Texas abortion law.
Hrono claimed that the Supreme Court including appointees of former President Donald Trump has been using its “shadow docket” to effectively overturn Roe V. Wade and that it was an “abuse of power” to do so.
“I think we’ll be hearing from scholars as to the abuse of the shadow docket by this Supreme Court because they’ve used the shadow docket to do the thing they just did,” Hrono said, “basically to overturn Roe v. Wade, 28 times in the Trump years and only four during the entire times of Bush and Obama. So there is in my view the abuse of power of the shadow docket and what’s going to happen probably is more calls for court reform.”
Hrono said the Congress would try to codify Roe V. Wade at the federal level and that some states were also doing so. She encouraged people to vote, for Democrats of course, at the state level.
“Why should anyone have lifetime appointments to any job? she asked. “Therefore as part of the hearing on the shadow docket, I think there will be calls for term limits on the Supreme Court.”
