A high-ranking Republican senator just issued a stunning announcement on impeachment. President Donald Trump is stunned by this reversal.
Appearing on NBC News, Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) said that a Senate impeachment trial is “a moot point because, I think right now Donald Trump is no longer the president, he is a former president.”
“Article 1, I think it is Section 6 and 7 specifically point out that you can impeach the president, and it does not indicate that you can impeach someone that is not in office,” Rounds continued.
But this is the predicament that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) put Congress in when she pushed a “snap impeachment” right before Trump left office. Now, the Senate has to deal with the issue.
The problem, as Rounds pointed out, is the constitutional authority doesn’t exist to “impeach someone that is not in office,” and the Senate’s primary role is to decide whether to convict and oust a sitting president.
However, Trump is a private citizen, so this is impossible. If Senate Democrats decide to push through a partisan conviction, they will be declaring that they have virtually unlimited power to convict private citizens.
