A top health official in Ohio who many deem responsible for the state’s strict lockdown measures in response to the coronavirus pandemic has stepped down from her position, though she isn’t going away entirely.
Breitbart reported that Dr. Amy Acton, the now-former director of the Ohio Department of Health, resigned from that office on Thursday.
However, she will remain in a position of influence and power as she will retain her spot as the chief health adviser for Gov. Mike DeWine (R), who said in a statement, “It is difficult for me to put in words how grateful I am for Dr. Acton’s service to the state.”
It was largely on Acton’s advice that Gov. DeWine had issued a State of Emergency declaration in mid-March and imposed strict lockdown orders that forced the shuttering of all “non-essential” businesses that has brought untold grief and economic ruin to millions of Ohioans.
It remains to be seen if Acton’s stepping down from her role at the Department of Health while remaining by the governor’s side as a top adviser will quell the concerns of critics or only add fuel to the fire of opposition.
