The number two-ranked tennis player in the world as well as the highest-paid player in the world, Naomi Osaka, was fined $15,000 after she said on social media that she would not give required press interviews during the French Open.
Her statement said that she has “often felt that people have no regard for athletes mental health and this rings very true whenever I see a press conference or partake in one.”
In particular, she seemed to take issue with being asked agonizing questions about losses and being filmed breaking down after at least one loss.
“I’m just not going to subject myself to people that doubt me,” she said, adding that it is like “kicking a person when they’re down.”
Osaka may be subject to more fines in the future if she does not give press interviews, which are a part of each player’s contract.
