Brittany Griner, a star player in the Women’s National Basketball Association, was arrested last month after vape cartridges were found in her luggage.
She is now being held in Russia, and her way home is complicated by the war in Ukraine that has led to Russia being isolated by the international community.
The vape cartridges found in Griner’s luggage contained cannabis which in Russia, possession of cannabis can lead to a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
Griner would ordinarily have a good path to getting off without too much trouble due to her foreign status, but with the war and the isolation of Russia, Russian authorities aren’t going to have a lot of incentive to treat Griner well.
While the WNBA is working to extricate Griner from her predicament, things aren’t looking good.
Russia could very well use her as a ransom asset or as a hostage to stop the international community from their zealous crusade to cut off Russia entirely.
