Long time Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols, who portrayed Lieutenant Nyota Uhura, has died at age 89, her son announced to Facebook on Sunday.
“I regret to inform you that a great light in the firmament no longer shines for us as it has for so many years,” her son Kyle wrote.
“Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration.”
Nichols starred on the original show from 1966-1969, and also appeared in each of the six Star Trek movies made from 1979-1991.
She reportedly had dementia and was in the middle of a guardianship battle when she died.
