A high-ranking lawmaker just tested positive for the coronavirus. She now joins a handful of other members of Congress and their staff members who have contracted it. This is breaking news.
“This morning I received a positive COVID-19 test result and will be quarantined for the 14 days,” tweeted Rep. Jahana Hayes (D-CT). “After going to 2 urgent care centers yesterday, I finally got an appointment at a 3rd site and was tested this morning.”
Hayes, a Democrat serving her first term, also said that she took “every possible precaution and still contracted coronavirus.” Her tweet included a video of her wearing a mask and temporarily lowering it to get tested for the virus.
The congresswoman reported that she is “asymptomatic, except for breathing issues which are being monitored,” and asked for prayers for her family and staff members — all of whom will need to be tested and possibly quarantined.
It just goes to show that all the precautions can be taken, but the nature of a virus is unpredictable. There is no telling how Hayes contracted it, and Americans are certainly praying that she experiences a speedy, full recovery.
Statistically, the vast majority of people who contract COVID-19 recover from it — though it can certainly be deadly, especially to those with a preexisting condition or the elderly. The best thing we can do is take precautions but keep America open.
